The following is a list of main characters from the Paper Mario series of video games. This series is a spinoff of the Mario franchise featuring paper-style 2D characters and worlds.[1]
Development
[edit]The first two Paper Mario games were recognised for introducing unique, original companions that were either races already in the Mario series or related to the Mario universe. Among the more well-known examples being Goombella, a student Goomba, Madame Flurrie, and Vivian. However, after Thousand-Year Door, the series largely moved away from this in favor of using existing characters or introducing new characters unrelated to the series gradually reduced the introduction of original characters in favour of making more use of existing characters or new features unrelated to the Mario universe.[2] This restriction was dubbed the "Mario mandate" by fans and critics and was controversial in that it diminished a character's uniquenesss. However, the 2024 remake of The Thousand-Year Door featured a purple Toad with a unique design, a change that was seen as a possible sign that the restriction was being relaxed.[3]
Main characters
[edit]Mario, Princess Peach, Bowser, and Luigi are the four playable characters in the Paper Mario series.[4] Matt Casamassina of IGN points out that each character has a unique playing style, enhancing the overall gameplay experience and enriching the enjoyment. In addition, he mentions that the ease of switching between characters is a big advantage of the game, and certain puzzles require the players to use two or more characters at the same time in order to progress."[5]
